Samsung ProXpress SL-C3060FR Color Laser Multifunction Printer Driver and Software

The Samsung ProXpress SL-C3060FR is a color multifunction peripheral that can print, scan, copy and fax double-sided documents. Although it looks compact enough for home use, it is primarily aimed at small offices. Business-friendly features include a Gigabit Ethernet port for fast data transfers and a USB host function. Oddly, there’s no dedicated port for it – you have to reach back to plug in a USB stick.

This is a fast printer – Samsung claims it can deliver up to 30 black or color pages per minute – but there are other gaps in its specification. Chief among these is the meager 250-sheet paper tray that comes standard. At a minimum, you can upgrade with up to two 550-sheet paper cassettes, which when combined with the standard 50-sheet multipurpose tray gives a maximum capacity of 1,400 sheets.

The touch-sensitive control panel is smart and easy to use, but surprisingly for a modern Samsung printer there is no standard Wi-Fi or NFC interface.

Laser-class devices (technically, the C3060FR uses LED light for imaging) are often noisy, but it’s easy to live with this printer. There’s a minimum of rattling or scratching from the paper transport, while the fans stop quickly after a print job.

It starts again pretty quickly too. I timed out the first page after 11 seconds from standby or 15 seconds after an hour of idle. However, in our testing, I couldn’t approach Samsung’s claimed speed because the printer kept recalibrating itself during the job. This is usually just something we see on new printers and I would expect it to become less common with continued use, but the best speeds I timed were 19.7 pages per minute when printing mono text and still an impressive 18.5 pages per minute in our complex color graphics test.

The C3060FR was undoubtedly incredibly fast thanks to dual processors and its fast Ethernet connection. I set a single black A4 copy to nine seconds, while a color copy took 13 seconds. Using the 50-page automatic document feeder, a 10-page black or color copy took about 35 seconds. Previewing an A4 page or scanning at 150 or 300 dots per inch (dpi) took just eight seconds, while scanning a 6×4″ postcard took just six seconds at 600 dpi or 15 seconds at 1,200 dpi.

Samsung ships the C3060FR with a 4,000-page black toner and 2,500-page color toners, while the replacement is 8,000 and 5,000 pages respectively. At the best prices we could find, the running cost is 5.7p per page, split between 0.9p for the black section and 4.8p for the colour. That’s extremely competitive for a laser-class device, but I’m not convinced it makes up for the C3060FR’s high price, especially considering it’s not particularly highly specified.
