Samsung Xpress SL-M2875FD Laser Multifunction Printer Driver and Software

Samsung makes many laser printers and all-in-ones for itself and as a contractor for companies like Dell. The Samsung Xpress SL-M2875FD is one that it markets itself. As the suffixes suggest, it has built-in fax capabilities and duplex printing. It is aimed at the home office, but also works in small offices.

Design and Functions

The Samsung Xpress M2875FD is surprisingly small in both its footprint and height. The dark gray top, almost black but with a hint of brown on the plastic, is full of large radius curves that soften the look of the machine. The 40-sheet ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) fits perfectly on the top and the lid hinges extend for scanning books and magazines.

The control panel is clear with action buttons on the right end and fax number pad, navigation ring and illuminated mode buttons as you move to the left. Then there is a two-line LCD panel and at the extreme left end there are four special function keys. These offer ID card copy, quick dark control and copy enlargement, and a one-button eco mode.

Connections and Installation

There are jacks on the back for USB and 10/100 Ethernet connections, as well as third-party phone lines and handsets. There is no wireless deployment on this computer. If you need this, the Xpress M2875FW includes this for an extra £25.

In addition to the well-designed printer driver, Samsung offers OCR software for the scanner. The drum and toner cartridge is a two-piece component, and toner cartridges that clip into the drum unit are available in two yields of 1,200 and 3,000 pages.

Samsung rates the Xpress M2875FD at 28 ppm, but we saw a top speed of a little less than 21 ppm, just three-quarters of the rated speed. That was for the 20-page long document and for the more typical five-page text, the speed dropped to 12.5 ppm, or 13.0 ppm in Eco mode. A 15 x 10 cm photo took 15 seconds at the highest print quality.

Print Quality and Costs

The quality of the Samsung Xpress M2875FD’s prints was quite good, with clean, sharp text and no signs of splatter or other artifacts. Business graphics prints were also generally clear, although some limitation on the number of grayscales available means that different colors in originals can result in identical grays.

Text copies were also clean, although grayscale copies looked splotchy and came through darker than originals. Our photo test with the best print quality available showed little banding and yielded good resolution, even capturing some shadow detail that is often lost with mono laser prints.

Verdict

The Samsung Xpress M2875FD is a very serviceable mono laser all-in-one. It doesn’t flood the desktop and generally delivers good quality prints at a reasonable speed. It’s not the cheapest device, although it’s easy to use. Eco-printing can reduce costs and benefit the environment.
