Samsung CLP-600 Color Laser Printer Drivers and Software

At first glance, the Samsung CLP-600 printer is another color laser printer designed to compete for its share of the low-end market. At street prices of $365 to $400, the price is certainly right, and with identical output rates of 21 pages per minute for color and monochrome, it can easily compete with even the most expensive printers covered in this test.

It also offers a very respectable 2400×600 equivalent color resolution and 600×600 monochrome. As you can guess from its fast output speeds, the Samsung CLP-600 uses a single-pass printing engine.

Otherwise, the printer is as simple and straightforward as you’d expect. It comes with a 250-sheet paper tray and a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray and can handle a reasonable range of paper and envelope sizes. An additional 500-sheet paper tray is available as an additional option.

No duplex unit is available, although the driver guides users through the movements required to print first on one side of a print job and then on the other side, requiring human intervention to make this work.

The Samsung CLP-600 is in the middle of the size range of the printers covered here, measuring 46.5cm x 46.5cm x 44.5cm (18.3″ x 18.3″ x 17.5″). It also falls in the middle of the weight. Replacement toner cartridges are rated at 4,000 pages and cost $100 for black and $135 for CMY colors. These are widely available in the aftermarket and better discount prices may be available.

Be careful when shopping for this printer, and a concerted search for discounts and rebates can pay off. We found numerous reports from buyers claiming to have paid $200 or less for their units, most of whom also reported decent satisfaction or better with the printing performance.

Our own experience with this printer has shown that it handles color and black-and-white text well, handles line drawings and simple color graphics well, and is just satisfactory with high-resolution color images or photos. This is what we expected from low-end color laser printers.
