Samsung CLP-620ND Color Laser Printer Driver and Software

The control panel on the front of the Samsung CLP-620ND is simple but sufficient. It features a 2-line, 16-character LCD display, a ring of control buttons, a four-segment blue LED bezel, and two additional buttons for power and job cancel. There is also a large red and green LED indicator for error conditions.

Part of the large front panel folds into a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray, and there is a 250-sheet main paper tray. Optionally, you can add a second 500-sheet tray underneath.

Samsung rates the Samsung CLP-620ND at 20 pages per minute for both black and color printing, and we got closer to that than we did with the Samsung CLX-6220FX. Our five-page text print took 28 seconds and yielded a real-world speed of 10.7 pages per minute. Coincidentally, this was also the speed for the five-page black text and color graphics document.

When printing the 20-page text document, the speed increased to 16.2 pages per minute, which is very reasonable for a centerline color laser. The device performs what is known as real-time calibration, which attempts to ensure constant color fidelity. This is a laudable goal. However, this means that a print job will regularly take longer than normal due to this automatic adjustment.

Duplex printing is standard on this machine, which is not common for a color laser, and it prints quickly and effectively. Our 20-page document, printed as a 10-page duplex job, took 2:30, exactly eight pages per minute.

We were particularly impressed with the color quality of the multifunction version of this device, and the prints we received here were of similarly high quality. Black text is clear and dense, very suitable for general office use. Even in small print sizes it is clear and precise.

Colors are also bright and attention-grabbing, although some blues and greens are a bit dark by default. Black and color registration is particularly good. Our text and color graphics test piece places black text at a small point size over areas of solid color fill. This is a demanding test for any color page printer. Here there was no evidence of white halos around the black characters.

There are two consumables to consider: the drum and toner cartridges and the transfer belt. The cartridges have a standard yield of 2,500 pages or a high yield of 5,000 pages, while the transfer belt should last for 50,000 pages and therefore may not need to be replaced during the life of the device.

Verdict

Like its multifunction sibling, the Samsung CLP-620ND is very good at what it does. It prints high quality black and color pages with particularly good color reproduction for a laser. It can be done quickly, single or double sided, with minimal effort and maintenance is both cost effective and quick and easy to do.
