Samsung CLP-660 Color Laser Printer Drivers and Software
The Samsung CLP-660 color laser printer from Samsung has a lot of competition in its price range. While it’s a decent printer in many ways, its subpar graphics quality dampens our overall enthusiasm for it.
The CLP-660 achieved a reasonable speed of 19.8 pages per minute (ppm) when printing text in our tests. The top graphics printing speed was a staggering 2.9 ppm. The text quality was excellent, the letterforms were deep black and finely drawn. Unfortunately, graphic examples of all kinds fell victim to a noticeable moir & # 233; Pattern and graininess. Glossy laser paper didn’t improve things much.
The design of the Samsung CLP-660 has its unpleasant aspects. Expanding the 250-sheet input tray for legal-size paper involves a difficult jamming process. The handle to open the 100-sheet multi-purpose tray is difficult to distinguish from the front handle, which is in the same location.
Strangely, the front panel only opens slightly when you first pull it. You have to pull it a second time, a little harder, to fully open it. The 200-sheet output tray is at the very back, which may be difficult for some people to reach. A 500-sheet input tray option is available.
The control panel is simple for the most part. You navigate the menus on the two-line monochrome LCD using a short row of clearly labeled buttons. Some of the messages displayed may be more like normal language, but most are understandable. Samsung’s SmartPanel Monitor application addresses the gap by providing screen status, troubleshooting and other useful information.
The machine comes with standard yield cartridges, 2500 pages of black and 2000 pages of cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield versions we offer are still a bit pricey: a 5500-page black cartridge costs $110, or 2 cents per page, while each 5000-page color cartridge costs $130, or 2.6 cents per color and Page costs.
Although installing the printer began with one of those potentially daunting, wordless posters, the process went smoothly. The PDF user manual provides plenty of operating instructions, but not much information about the driver or software.

When we tried to use Samsung’s own driver for the printer, it stalled in our Photoshop tests due to a mysteriously missing DLL file. We ended up testing it with the PostScript driver instead. At press time, Samsung said it had fixed the driver issue, but had not confirmed a date for releasing the fix.
