Samsung ML-1440 Laser Printer Drivers and Software

The Samsung ML-1440 comes with a starter cartridge that’s good for about 2000 sheets, so you won’t have to pick up your first replacement for a month or several months, depending on how much printing you do.

The ML-1440 is a pseudo-SOHO printer, and although it has the boxy shape and paper tray underfoot, it looks more like a home printer than a real SOHO.

Since the majority of its components are made of plastic, the printer is best suited for small workgroups or individuals. We were immediately concerned about durability, as the fold-down manual paper trays were based on plastic components rather than metal. For example, a dropped amount of paper on the open tray could easily snap one of the envelope tray supports.

With such potentially catastrophic accidents, the Samsung ML-1440 has a number of features that will attract the attention of people looking for an office-like printer on a budget.

The ML1440 spits out black and white prints at 600 x 600 dpi at a speed of 15 pages per minute. Toner cartridges are rated for 5% coverage at 6000 pages.

The ML-1440 uses a 66MHz RISC processor with 8MB of fixed memory. For the type of work this printer will see, the 8MB buffer should be sufficient.

The ML-1440 is a medium-sized printer with a desktop footprint of 35cm x 39.5cm x 24cm. It uses standard 120V AC and weighs approximately 11kg. After turning off, it takes about 40 seconds to warm up and be ready to print.

The ML-1440 comes with useful software that allows the user to print in various ways, insert watermarks, change the number of printer pages on each sheet of paper, etc. The software package is consistent with other Samsung printers we’ve tested in the past and is fairly sophisticated.

Manual duplexing is available, but honestly who really has the time to sit down and turn the pages just so they’re double-sided?

The printer can also be set to toner saver mode, which uses less precious black power. In the past we’ve seen this feature work best for text only, as images appear too bright for comfort. If you tend to print out a lot of draft copies to mark with a red pen, this feature is very handy and can help extend the life of your toner cartridge quite a bit.
