Samsung SCX-3206 Laser Multifunction Printer Driver and Software

The Samsung SCX-3206 is a brilliantly packaged device that manages to squeeze a monochrome laser printer and scanner into a slightly smaller footprint than even most inkjet MFPs. Many cheaper printers look run-of-the-mill, but the Samsung SCX-3206 is made from sleek black plastic, enlivened by glossy inserts around the output tray and control panel. The latter is a simple affair without a color screen; there is only a two-digit numeric LED display for copy numbers.

Since there is no display, you must connect the MFP to your PC before you can connect it to a wireless network, unless your router supports WiFi Protected Setup (WPS). Samsung’s installer simplifies the process.

The printer uses a single consumable that combines toner with an imaging drum. Spare parts cost £43 and are good for 1,500 pages, but the included starter item is only good for around 700 pages.

While the Samsung SCX-3206 looks great when not in use, it’s not quite as smooth when filled with paper. This inserts into a 150-sheet tray that protrudes from the front.

This increases the footprint, and because the tray has no sides or lid, the stack of paper can collect dust when the printer is not used often. The output tray supports the center of the page but not the edges, so the printed material may curl a little. However, the flip-up stop helps keep the pages neat.

Otherwise there isn’t much to criticize. The Samsung SCX-3206 prints at a modest 16 pages per minute (PPM), so it’s quieter and rattles less than faster machines – making the noise bearable if you have to share a desk with the printer.

The scanner lid hinges feel a little loose, but they extend up about an inch to allow the lid to close flat when handling thick originals. Both the print and scan interfaces are well laid out, offering casual users simple information with advanced settings just a click or two away.

We expect good text from laser printers, and the Samsung SCX-3206 produced exceptionally sharp and black characters without any jaggedness. Printed photos and presentations were well above average, with good control over shading. Although fast, at 9 seconds for an A4 page, photocopies were too dark, and there is no button on the printer to lighten them – you have to change the setting in the printer driver. That’s a surprising spot because the scanner pairs well with the printer and captures sharp images with accurate shading detail and colors on a variety of test materials.

Although we like the Samsung SCX-3206’s looks, ease of use and print and scan quality, its running costs are a little higher than we’d like at this price. It’s a great choice for home or small business, but printing in bulk would quickly get expensive.
