Samsung Xpress SL-C460W Color Laser Multifunction Printer Driver and Software

The Samsung Xpress SL-C460W moves into inkjet printer territory with a host of features that are too often missing from laser printers. However, some compromises were made along the way.

The four toner cartridges (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) cost £60 each on Samsung’s website, with the black tank lasting 1500 pages and the color cartridges lasting 1000 pages.

This equates to 4 pages per page for mono printing and 22 pages per page for each color page, which is a bit high for laser printers in general, but about what you’d expect from a budget all-in-one home laser.

Its dimensions and weight also show that the Samsung Multifunction Xpress C460FW is aimed at the home and home office market. At 14.3 inches tall, 13.1 inches deep, and 16 inches wide, it takes up less space on your desk or shelf than most laser printers, and at just under 30 pounds, it’s light enough to handle without one Carrying a friend around to help you. However, if you plan to use it on a shelf, make sure it is sturdy.

Connectivity

The Samsung Multifunction Xpress C460FW doesn’t skimp on connectivity options. In addition to connecting directly to your computer via USB, you can also network it via Ethernet or Wi-Fi, with WPS supported for easy setup. Wi-Fi Direct lets you print directly from your computer or mobile device without having to join a network.

There are also numerous mobile printing options. You can print and fax directly from your smartphone and scan to it too. The Samsung Multifunction Xpress C460FW supports NFC (Near Field Communication) connectivity, so you can print from a compatible phone by simply holding it next to the printer. This is one of the first laser printers to offer this feature, but unfortunately it is not yet ubiquitous in smartphones either. You won’t find it on an iPhone, for example.

You can also print images and documents directly from a USB memory stick. However, because it doesn’t have a color screen (it has a two-line LCD just half an inch high and two and a half inches wide), you can’t review images saved to your USB stick before printing.

Print Quality

The print quality is great, although just a step below the star. Not a particularly big step. The Samsung Multifunction Xpress C460FW will satisfy all but the most fiddly high-end users with crystal clear, vibrant characters and no bleeding or blurring.

Perhaps the thinner fonts could be a little darker, but this is a minor point of contention. Overall, text output is excellent even at very low point sizes. It is suitable for all business and personal purposes, as well as virtually all desktop publishing tasks.

Verdict

The laser printer has long been the format of choice for business use, but has yet to make significant headway in the domestic market. We suspect this will change in the next few years as prices become very affordable (though still more expensive than inkjet printers) and features normally associated with home inkjet printers finally make their way to lasers.

But we haven’t yet seen a color multifunction laser printer that could finally break the dam and flood the domestic market with laser models. The Samsung Multifunction Xpress C460FW makes a valiant attempt, but for our money it falls short of this lofty goal.
