Samsung ML-1865W Printer Driver and Software

The Samsung ML-1865W is about half the size of a normal laser printer (341 x 224 x 184 mm) and can easily be stored on a small shelf with the paper trays closed. It’s finished in glossy black and also looks a bit more stylish than your average office model.

Despite the printer’s small size, the power supply is located inside, so you don’t have a huge power brick on the floor next to it. The version we had to review also includes built-in Wi-Fi, but there is also another version that drops Wi-Fi and therefore costs a little less.

Setting up the Samsung ML-1865W is a breeze as it comes pre-installed with a 700-page starter cartridge. When changing the cartridge, the process is very simple as it simply lifts out from the belly of the machine. There’s even a handle to make it easier to grip.

When you’re ready to print, simply fold down a front flap that forms the paper in the tray and adjust the paper stop to the sheet size you’re using. At the top you fold up an envelope that shows the attempt to run out the paper. Both the paper input and paper trays can hold up to 150 sheets of A4 paper at a time. This is a pretty good capacity for use in a home office.

The ML-1865 prints almost instantly, rather than spending a lot of time pre-processing pages. Over USB, it managed to print our 10-page text document in 48 seconds and spit out 10 pages of our black graphics test document in 44 seconds. Printing our 10-page test presentation was similarly quick, as this task was completed in 45 seconds.

The print quality of the 1,200 dpi printing machine is also very impressive. The text was very dark, solid and clear without any toner bleeding onto the page. While there were some very light streaks visible on the graphics test document, the overall quality was still very good for a sub-£100 printer.

It’s also a pretty cheap model. Aside from paper, a replacement cartridge is the only consumable you’ll need. A 1,500 page cartridge at the time of this review can be purchased online for £49. With the addition of 0.7p for paper, which works at a running cost of 3.96p per page.
