Samsung ML-2855ND Laser Printer Drivers and Software

Unfortunately, the Samsung ML-2855ND cannot compete elsewhere. The first problem is capacity. We expect an input capacity of more than 300 pages for this kind of money, especially considering the maximum monthly duty cycle of an impressive 50,000 pages.

But this is not where the biggest problems arise. The main cause of our concern is the poor speed – a 28ppm rating simply isn’t fast enough for a printer at this price. In our testing, it proved to be the slowest of the 28ppm lasers this month, outputting pages at an average rate of 25ppm. To put that performance into perspective, it’s not only slower than all printers in this month’s group, but also the majority of sub-£200 labs last month.

The Samsung ML-2855ND’s output quality starts to improve things: this printer is capable of producing outstanding text with clean edges, deep blacks, well-formed characters at all point sizes, and very little satellite toner spatter.

Photo output isn’t bad either: although there is some horizontal banding, the images are impressive thanks to smooth dithering and sharp contrast. Graphics also look good, with color gradients rendered as smoothly as you could hope for.

But when it comes to value for money, unfortunately it’s down to earth again. Although the features are consistent with what we would expect from a business laser – duplex, Ethernet and a good helping of memory (64MB) – the price of the device is too high and the cost of consumables is not as high as we like either. All in all, this Samsung is likeable but clearly middle of the road. Even if you don’t care about running costs, the Lexmark offers more bang for your buck.
